EPISODE #2
LOCATION: TaxSlayer Center - Moline, Illinois
DATE: November 28, 2021
ATTENDANCE: 10,556 [12,000 Capacity]
Alison James: Welcome back, one and all, to BWF Sunday Night Shockwave!
Liam Stewart: We’ve got a hell of a show for you all tonight, including BWF World Champion Johnny Maverick in action for the first time since Ghouls, Ghosts & Gutbusters!
Alison James: And in tonight’s main event, the vacant United States Title will be decided as five competitors face off in what is sure to be a vicious Ladder Match!
Liam Stewart: But right now, we’re kicking things off right with a rematch of sorts from the last episode of Shockwave. It’s Nessa Wall vs. Helena Handbasket, and it starts RIGHT NOW! Let’s go down to the ring!
MATCH TYPE: Singles [1 vs. 1]
STIPULATION: N/A
PARTICIPANTS: Nessa Wall (2-2-0), Helena Handbasket (2-1-0)
ASSIGNED OFFICIAL: Bella Kosiboski
COUNTOUTS: Yes
DISQUALIFICATIONS: Yes
MATCH FINISH: Following her tag team loss two weeks ago to Helena and Logan, Nessa went into this match with a chip on her shoulder, ready to tear Helena apart. She did hold the momentum for most of the contest, but got distracted when Kurt Hullum, her Wreckless opponent, made his way nonchalantly out to ringside. Following a ref bump from an errant spinning backfist, Kurt grabbed a chair and slid into the ring, seizing his opportunity to cost Nessa the match and wound her en route to their PPV encounter. He swung, but Nessa rolled out of the way, leading Kurt to crack Helena across the side of the head instead! He turned around, enraged, and swung the chair at Nessa again, but she caught him with a leaping dropkick, slamming the chair into his own head and drawing blood! Kurt rolled out of the ring as Nessa kicked the chair under the bottom rope and covered Helena just as the ref was coming to. 1… 2… 3! The crowd boos loudly as Nessa rolls out of the ring and makes her way into the crowd, disappearing amongst the jeering fans.
WINNER: Nessa Wall (3-2-0) [via Pinfall]
TIME ELAPSED: 12 Minutes, 37 Seconds
POST-MATCH COMMENTARY: “Oh man! I think Kurt tried to cost Nessa the match, but that backfired spectacularly!” - Liam Stewart
“And he’s got Logan Bailey right after this commercial break. He’s got a target on him now for certain.” - Alison James
The camera moves backstage, where we see “The Emerald Phoenix” Emily Corlen catching up with Will Irwin. The crowd pops, but the cheers quickly turn to boos as Stutterfly enters the frame. Emily turns to face her and Will quickly exits the scene.
Emily Corlen: Katherine.
Stutterfly: Emphilia.
The two stare one another down, before finally busting into a fit of laughter and embracing in a warm hug.
Emily Corlen: Hey, kiddo. Hell of a promo out there on E-Phoen TV. You versus Johnny is gonna burn Cincinnati to the ground.
Stutterfly: Thanks. And, uh… sorry about everything. You know… this year.
Emily looks down and sighs softly before meeting Katie’s gaze again, trying her best to smile through the pain.
Emily Corlen: Yeah, it’s, uh… anyway. What’s up?
Stutterfly: Well, I wanted you to hear it from me. I just got out of Dave’s office, and he said he wanted me to have a match on Shockwave before I face Johnny at Wreckless. Which, fair enough, I suppose. Anyway, he asked if I had a potential opponent in mind, and I told him there was only one person I wanted to face in two weeks.
She beams as Emily considers it.
Emily Corlen: …alright. You’re on, pink.
Stutterfly: Let’s go out there and show the world what the #1 top female in pro wrestling can do… and you’ll be there too, of course.
They both chuckle.
Stutterfly: And hey, you don’t need to worry about me cheap shotting you or anything. We’ve been through so much hell together. Not gonna let some silly little thing like our viewpoints get between the Super Smash Sisters themselves, right?
Emily tussles Stutterfly’s hair.
Emily Corlen: Fuckin’ A right we aren’t. See you next show. Loser buys dinner?
Stutterfly: You’re on.
The two women hug again before Stutterfly walks away. Emily pauses for a moment.
Emily Corlen: …wait, did she call me… Emphilia? That’s not even a real name, much less… oh, whatever.
She shakes her head and chuckles as the camera fades back to the ring.
MATCH TYPE: Singles [1 vs. 1]
STIPULATION: N/A
PARTICIPANTS: Kurt Hullum (0-2-0), Logan Bailey (1-1-0)
ASSIGNED OFFICIAL: Theo Martin
COUNTOUTS: Yes
DISQUALIFICATIONS: Yes
MATCH FINISH: By the time the cameras returned to the ring, Kurt had been cleaned up by ringside staff, though the bandage over his forehead cut still called attention to itself. Enraged by his earlier miscalculation, Kurt came into this match looking to punish Logan (still in her female form) and did, netting several near falls but struggling to put the slippery newcomer away. Indeed, things looked finished when Kurt hit Logan with the Kurtain Kall (Hangman’s Facebuster), but as he covered, Nessa reappeared, hopping the barricade and carefully grabbing Logan’s foot, pulling it onto the bottom rope! The ref sees the foot just before counting 3 and calls the pin off, sending Kurt into a frenzy. Realizing what has happened, he exits the ring and gives chase to Nessa, who makes her way back up the ramp and through the curtain. Kurt chases her, not paying attention to the count, and before he can realize what has happened, Theo Martin hits the ten count and calls for the bell!
WINNER: Logan Bailey (2-1-0) [via Countout]
TIME ELAPSED: 9 Minutes, 22 Seconds
POST-MATCH COMMENTARY: “Oh, no! Nessa is 2 and 0 against Kurt here tonight, and I can’t imagine the longest reigning World Champion in BWF history is happy about that.” - Alison James
“It definitely looks like Nessa Wall has Kurt Hullum’s number going into Wreckless. I can’t imagine this beef is going to be settled peacefully, and I wouldn’t have it any other way! HA!” - Liam Stewart
Pre-recorded footage takes place in an empty warehouse. Minka Carter is standing by, sitting on the middle of a ladder. She’s got an evil smirk on her face, indicating some confidence especially after she was able to pick up a victory last Sunday. Still, her eyes are telling a different story and giving off a different focus as she knows that an even grander challenge is ahead. Minka is looking like someone that is definitely not going to be denied as she begins to express her thoughts.
Minka Carter: I told you so! You all didn’t want to believe me when I stated that I was BETTER than what I showed in that title tournament. You were all writing me off, weren’t you? You thought I was going to be just some other failure that wasn’t going to last in BWF but that is where you are wrong. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I have gone to other companies and not get off to the greatest of starts only to break through, rise up and really shut so many doubters and haters up and I know that two weeks ago, when I faced Andi Seraph, and when I BEAT Andi Seraph, that I turned the heads of every single one of you. You all thought that Andi Seraph had an easy win over me didn’t you? You all wrote me off, didn’t you? Don’t lie. You know you did. It wouldn’t be the first time anyone has written me off. But that’s the thing. I have always had a knack for proving people WRONG and showing people exactly who the hell I am!
I EARNED my way into this ladder match with my victory over Andi and if you still want to write me off, you have another thing coming for you. It’s like I’ve been saying: I didn’t come here to be just another wrestler. I came here to be the best. This match tonight is further going to highlight that because I AM going to scale that ladder and I AM going to become the new BWF United States Champion. Sure, my main goal is to ultimately get the monkey off of my back and to cease being the best wrestler in the business that has never won a world championship, but this United States Championship? Yeah, it’ll do for now. I know how to take a championship like that and add MEANING to it! The last two singles championships that I’ve had? One of which I STILL hold today as a matter of fact. They were lost in obscurity before I won them and when I win this United States Championship, I am going to do the exact same thing I’ve done with my last two singles titles and that is MAKE THIS MEAN SOMETHING!
I am going to give you a champion that you are going to want to dethrone. I am going to give you a champion that is going to inspire her challengers, in vain of course, to be BETTER. Who else in this match is capable of that? Joanna? PFFT!
“BUT THE TOURNAMENT!” you’ll say to that.
FLUKE!
I’m sure beating Andi and subsequently winning tonight will prove that was all a fluke.
Who else is capable of giving that title the best new beginning possible? Luke Marshall? The IDIOT is on social media celebrating that he has this title shot right out of the gate but his inclusion as a ‘wild card’ disgusts me because he hasn’t done ANYTHING to get involved in this match. So, is this going to be the Luke Marshall story where he comes in, shocks the world and wins a title in his first match? TO HELL WITH THAT! This shouldn’t be about him! The hype shouldn’t be about him. It should be about ME! I don’t give a crap about the new guy or how excited he is. If anything, he’s acting like it’s the biggest opportunity that he has ever had… and it most likely is! I am NOT going to be shoved aside for some shock, out of nowhere, wildcard story!
Vanessa Page? Is it going to be her? YAWN! NOPE! “But she came SO CLOSE to winning the tournament”... I DON’T CARE! Vanessa Page is TRITE! Vanessa Page is just your average socialite that is just like anyone else that declares themselves a socialite. She’s not someone that stands out at all. She would be, quite frankly, the most BORING champion imaginable out of the five people that are in this match. I don’t care if she advanced far in the tournament. All I care about is the fact that she is BENEATH ME because she’d rather spend her time flaunting her assets around and looking pretty rather than being a real wrestler AND I DO NOT ABIDE THAT! She’s one of those wrestlers that would drag that U.S. title into obscurity. This is a wrestling promotion, Vanessa, not a fashion magazine. Go drag your ass to Cosmopolitan or someone that actually CARES about your existence.
Aislin Finn? Okay, here’s someone who I have some SLIGHT familiarity with at least. Heh, nice wisecrack about the whole “demon” thing, but NO… I am NOT going around calling people DEMONS anymore! That shtick is RETIRED. You think I’m the same Minka that you knew from before? No, I have evolved in so many different ways that you couldn’t even hope to understand. I am far more ruthless than you could’ve ever imagined before. I will gladly bring you up to speed on exactly who the hell I am when I constantly pound your pretty little face into that ladder and make your life a miserable hell just like I will with the others. Don’t get me wrong, I am STILL fighting demons… but not demons in the form of people… demons in the form of NEVER GETTING OVER THE HUMP, NEVER BEING A WORLD CHAMPION, ALWAYS BEING ON THE SIDELINES WHILE SOMEONE ELSE GETS ALL THE GLORY, ALL THE PEOPLE THAT DOUBT ME AND WRITE ME OFF WHILE THEY DECLARE SOMEONE ELSE THE FACE OF A COMPANY…
You name it…
And while YOU, nor any of my opponents are DEMONS to me, I am STILL going to take a HUGE step forward to conquering ALL the demons that I just mentioned when I become the United States Champion and show every single one of you that here in BWF, the one that deserves the spotlight the most is ME! Andi Seraph was just child’s play!
You all don’t even KNOW what I am capable of in an environment that works in MY FAVOR! Sorry to break your hearts… wait… no I’m not...hahahahaha
Minka has a huge chuckle to herself as she scales the ladder to the top. She sits on top of the ladder and looks over the abandoned warehouse as the scene ends.
MATCH TYPE: Singles [1 vs. 1]
STIPULATION: N/A
PARTICIPANTS: Kasey Kash (2-1-0), Johnny Maverick (1-0-0)
ASSIGNED OFFICIAL: Jack Stampler
COUNTOUTS: Yes
DISQUALIFICATIONS: Yes
MATCH FINISH: Kasey Kash entered this match looking for payback following his loss at Ghouls, Ghosts & Gutbusters, but as he would soon learn, even a Johnny Maverick not defending his title is a Johnny Maverick at the top of his game. The two squared off, with Kasey even gaining enough of a head of steam to nearly put the Champion away with the Going The Distance (Last Shot/Shining Wizard), but Johnny kicked out at two and Kasey began letting his frustrations boil over. Unfocused, he would struggle against Johnny, who methodically wore down Kasey’s arms before hitting the Prelude to Perfection (Jumping Double Knee Armbreaker), followed by the Perfect Armbar (Double Underhook Suplex floated over into Cross Armbreaker) for the submission victory.
WINNER: Johnny Maverick (2-0-0) [via Submission]
TIME ELAPSED: 8 Minutes, 39 Seconds
POST-MATCH COMMENTARY: “Kasey Kash put in a hell of an effort tonight, but Johnny Maverick continues to show why he is THE BWF World Champion.” - Alison James
“Even I can’t argue that. I have to say, I don’t like your sister’s odds come Wreckless.” - Liam Stewart
“Nor do I.” - Alison James
Following the match, even as Johnny celebrates the win with the fans at ringside, we see a disgruntled Kasey Kash begin dismantling the ringside area, throwing things (including a few chairs and the ring bell) before a few ring techs calm him down and corral him away from the ring.
MATCH TYPE: 5-Way [1 vs. 1 vs. 1 vs. 1 vs. 1]
STIPULATION: BWF United States Championship Ladder Match
PARTICIPANTS: Aislin Finn (1-1-0), Joanna the Jungle Girl (1-2-0), Luke Marshall (0-0-0), Minka Carter (1-1-0), Vanessa Page (1-1-0)
ASSIGNED OFFICIAL: Mark Burch
COUNTOUTS: N/A
DISQUALIFICATIONS: N/A
MATCH FINISH: Absolute chaos, as one might expect of a five-person Ladder Match. Everyone involved had at least one memorable moment, from Joanna moonsaulting off the ladder to land on everyone else on the outside, to Luke putting Aislin through two tables at ringside, to Aislin later shoving Luke off the top of the ladder and through another ladder propped up against the barricade and the apron. After Marisol, Vanessa’s manager, tried to shove the ladder over as Joanna tried to climb, Joanna jumped down and went after her, only to fall victim to an All the Money in the World (Backstabber) from Vanessa herself. Ultimately, the match came down to three; Joanna, Vanessa and Minka, all working their way up separate ladders towards the title. Vanessa and Minka work together to try to knock Joanna off, but Joanna, sensing an impending fall, leaps up, hitting both women with an enziguiri off the top off the ladder! Vanessa and Joanna both tumble off the ladders, landing with a thud on the canvas, but somehow, despite Joanna’s foot colliding directly with her face, Minka manages to hang on, narrowly avoiding dropping off the ladder herself! Aislin and Luke begin to stir on the outside, but their effort is too late, as Minka steadies herself, climbs the last two rungs, reaches up and pulls the BWF United States Championship off of the cord holding it!
WINNER AND NEW BWF UNITED STATES CHAMPION: Minka Carter (2-1-0) [via Title Retrieval]
TIME ELAPSED: 23 Minutes, 43 Seconds
POST-MATCH COMMENTARY: “AND WE HAVE A NEW UNITED STATES CHAMP! MINKA CARTER HAS DONE IT, AGAINST ALL ODDS!” - Liam Stewart
“That match absolutely could have gone five different ways, but owing perhaps to a killer grip, Minka Carter has, indeed, emerged victorious!” - Alison James
"Adrenalize Me" by In This Moment blasts across the arena sound system as Minka holds the Championship close, hurt yet still grinning ear to ear. Normally, the fans might boo Minka, but even they can’t help but applaud the effort of all five competitors as a “That was awesome” chant breaks out.
Liam Stewart: That was awesome! You’re damn right, Moline!
Alison James: Minka Carter has joined a lineage of Champions that dates back over eighteen years with her win here tonight, but as one of only two current Champions in BWF right now, she’s got a target on her back as well.
Liam Stewart: They’re definitely gonna be gunning for her now, for sure. It won’t be long before the four other members of this match want another shot at the gold, for one.
Alison James: Becoming a Champion is the easy part. Remaining a Champion is where the true challenge lies. Now, we see what Minka Carter is made of.
Liam Stewart: But, we’ll save that for the next show, because tonight, Ali, we are out of time!
Alison James: We sure are. Folks, we’ll be back in two weeks for the final stop on our road to Holiday Havok. For Liam Stewart, I’m Alison James… good night from Moline! Good night from Sunday Night Shockwave!
Liam Stewart: We’ll see you next time!
We see one final shot of Minka Carter celebrating with the United States Championship atop the ladder, before the show fades to the BWF logo, and ultimately, to black.
